Niwaki Garden Shears are beautifully balanced Japanese garden shears designed as an excellent all-round choice for hedge trimming, shrub shaping, box clipping and topiary. Sharp, hard-wearing and reassuringly solid in the hand, they are made for regular garden maintenance where clean, controlled clipping matters.

Made in Sanjo, Japan, the 185mm blades are forged from S60C carbon steel, which holds a sharp edge while remaining straightforward to sharpen and maintain. The FSC-certified oak handles are shaped with subtle bulges that help indicate the natural balance point of the tool, giving excellent control during repeated clipping.

What Are Niwaki Garden Shears Best For?

These are ideal for clipping hedges, shaping shrubs, trimming box and maintaining topiary. Their long blades make it easy to create smooth, even surfaces and work efficiently across larger areas of soft growth.

They are not designed as loppers and should not be forced through thick or hard woody branches. Niwaki recommends a maximum cut of approximately 3mm. For individual, more substantial stems use secateurs, while our Niwaki Loppers are designed for thicker woody branches up to approximately 25mm.

How to Use Niwaki Garden Shears

Use the shears for repeated clipping and shaping rather than cutting substantial individual branches. For slightly heavier cuts within the recommended limit, position the stem near the base of the blades, where the tool has the greatest leverage, and cut diagonally rather than straight across the fibres.

Avoid twisting, levering or applying uneven pressure to the blades. Japanese carbon steel is exceptionally sharp and hard but can chip if the tool is forced through material it was not designed to cut.

How to Care for Niwaki Garden Shears

Carbon-steel garden shears perform best when kept clean, sharp and dry. After use, remove sap, resin and surface rust with the Niwaki Clean Mate, then dry the blades thoroughly and protect them with a light coating of Niwaki Camellia Oil.

Keep the cutting edges sharp using the Niwaki #1000 Sharpening Stone. Sharp shears make a particularly noticeable difference when clipping box, hedges and topiary, where a clean finish depends on the blades cutting rather than crushing the foliage.
