Schlumbergera 'Naomi'

Schlumbergera ‘Naomi’, commonly known as a Christmas Cactus, is a compact flowering houseplant with arching, segmented green stems and vibrant pink flowers that appear during the darker months of the year. The bright blooms bring a welcome burst of colour to the home just as many other houseplants are slowing down for winter.

Supplied in a 13cm nursery pot at approximately 25cm+ tall, ‘Naomi’ is a full, established plant that looks lovely on a bright windowsill, shelf or side table. Unlike desert cacti, Schlumbergera originates from tropical forest environments and appreciates more regular moisture and gentler light.

Light & Position

Give Schlumbergera ‘Naomi’ plenty of bright, indirect or filtered light. Gentle morning or evening sun is usually fine, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sunshine through glass.

During autumn, naturally shorter days and longer nights help encourage flower bud formation. Avoid positioning the plant somewhere that remains brightly lit by lamps late into the evening.

Watering

Water when the upper few centimetres of compost have started to dry, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. Christmas Cacti prefer light, consistent moisture rather than being left completely dry for long periods.

From around mid-September, reduce watering slightly while the plant prepares to flower. Once flower buds are clearly visible, return to more regular watering while the flowers develop and open.

Humidity & Temperature

Schlumbergera appreciates moderate humidity and normal indoor temperatures of around 18–20°C during active growth and flowering.

To encourage flower buds, a cooler autumn period of around 12–15°C can be beneficial. Keep the plant away from radiators, cold draughts and sudden changes in temperature, particularly once buds have formed.

Feeding

Feed during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing using a balanced liquid houseplant feed or suitable cactus and succulent fertiliser. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Flowers

‘Naomi’ produces vivid pink flowers at the ends of its arching stems, typically from late autumn into winter. Individual flowers open in succession, creating a colourful seasonal display over several weeks.

Once buds have formed, try to keep the plant's conditions relatively stable. Sudden changes in temperature, watering or position can sometimes cause developing buds to drop.
