Gynura aurantiaca 'Purple Passion'

Gynura aurantiaca 'Purple Passion', commonly known as the Purple Velvet Plant, is an unusual houseplant grown for its extraordinary velvety foliage. Deep green leaves are densely covered in fine purple hairs that catch the light and give the whole plant an intense violet-purple glow.

Compact when young but increasingly trailing as it grows, 'Purple Passion' is ideal for shelves, desks and small plant displays. Regularly pinching back the growing tips helps keep the plant fuller and bushier rather than allowing the stems to become long and sparse.

Light & Position

Prefers bright, indirect light. Good light is particularly important for maintaining the strongest purple colouring, while plants kept in lower light may become greener and less vivid. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Allow the upper layer of compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Avoid keeping the compost permanently wet, particularly during winter when growth slows.

Try to water the compost directly rather than wetting the leaves. The soft, hairy foliage is best kept dry, so regular misting is not recommended.

Humidity & Temperature

Happy in normal household humidity and warm indoor temperatures. Keep away from cold draughts and direct heat sources.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a diluted liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.

Pruning & Growth

Pinch or trim the growing tips occasionally to encourage branching and maintain a compact, bushy shape. As the stems lengthen, the plant can also be allowed to trail naturally from a shelf or small hanging planter.
