Cereus jamacaru | Cuddly Cactus
🚚 Free UK shipping on orders over £50 🪴
Cereus jamacaru ‘Cuddly Cactus’ brings classic cactus character to your home with upright green stems, sculptural ribs and a nearly spineless appearance. Its clean lines make it a striking choice for a sunny windowsill, adding height and structure without taking up too much space.
Supplied in a 14cm nursery pot at approximately 30cm+ tall, this distinctive cactus looks particularly good in a simple ceramic or terracotta pot. Give it plenty of sunshine and time to dry between waterings, and it makes a rewarding, low-maintenance addition to your collection.
What Makes the Cuddly Cactus Special?
Cereus jamacaru is a columnar cactus native to Brazil. The form sold as ‘Cuddly Cactus’ has greatly reduced spines, allowing the shape and ribbed texture of its green stems to stand out.
Its playful name and sculptural appearance make it a lovely gift for a cactus enthusiast or someone with a bright, sunny home. Although usually nearly spineless, individual plants may have small spines or bristles, so check before handling.
Light & Position
Choose a spot with plenty of bright light and direct sunshine. A sunny south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal, with enough space for the stems to grow upright.
Introduce stronger sunshine gradually, especially if moving the plant from a shadier position. Insufficient light can cause thin, stretched growth, so this cactus is best suited to your brightest indoor spaces.
Watering
During spring and summer, water thoroughly, then allow the compost to dry out completely before watering again. Let all excess water drain away and empty any water collected inside the decorative pot.
Reduce watering substantially during autumn and winter, particularly in a cooler room. Check the compost rather than following a fixed schedule: a cactus in warm sunshine will dry out much faster than one in cooler winter conditions.
Humidity & Temperature
The Cuddly Cactus is comfortable in normal household humidity and does not need misting. A bright, airy position suits it better than a steamy bathroom.
Keep it warm during the growing season and protect it from frost, cold draughts and contact with cold window glass. A cooler, bright position in winter is suitable when watering is kept to a minimum.
Feeding
Feed during spring and summer using a cactus and succulent fertiliser, following the product's recommended dilution and frequency. Stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Growth & Care
This upright cactus gradually gains height and may develop branches as it matures. Its architectural shape needs little routine pruning.
Repot when the roots have filled the nursery pot or the plant becomes unstable, ideally in spring. Choose a pot just one size larger with drainage holes and use a gritty, free-draining cactus compost.
Handle carefully when moving or repotting, supporting the root ball rather than gripping the stems.
