add a pot to fit this plant

Aglaonema pictum ‘Tricolor’, often known as the Camouflage Plant or Tricolor Chinese Evergreen, is an unusual and highly distinctive houseplant prized for its extraordinary patterned foliage. Each leaf develops a mosaic of three different shades of green, creating the almost pixelated camouflage effect that makes this Aglaonema so instantly recognisable.

Supplied in a compact 6cm nursery pot at approximately 10cm tall, this is a small, slow-growing plant that is particularly appealing to collectors and anyone looking for something a little more unusual. The intricate leaf pattern becomes increasingly striking as the plant matures.

Light & Position

Give Aglaonema pictum ‘Tricolor’ plenty of bright, indirect or filtered light. Good light helps maintain strong growth and clearly defined foliage patterning, but avoid prolonged direct sunshine through glass, which can scorch the leaves.

Unlike some of the tougher, more common Chinese Evergreens, this variety appreciates particularly stable conditions and is best kept somewhere warm and protected from draughts.

Watering

Allow the upper layer of compost to dry slightly before watering, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. Aim to keep conditions relatively consistent rather than allowing the plant to alternate between being extremely wet and completely dry.

Water less frequently during autumn and winter when growth slows, and never leave the nursery pot standing in waterlogged compost.

Humidity & Temperature

Aglaonema pictum ‘Tricolor’ appreciates moderate to high humidity and warm, stable indoor temperatures. Keep away from cold windows, draughts, radiators and sudden changes in temperature.

Good surrounding humidity is particularly beneficial for this variety, although regular misting is not essential. Consistent warmth, humidity and airflow are more important.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at reduced strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Growth & Care

Aglaonema pictum ‘Tricolor’ is naturally slow growing and remains relatively compact, gradually producing new patterned leaves as it matures. Its slower pace is part of its appeal and makes it well suited to shelves, terrarium-style displays and smaller indoor plant collections.

Repot only when the roots have comfortably filled the existing nursery pot, using an airy, free-draining houseplant growing medium.

Water

Thoroughly water, then allow the top few centimeters of compost to dry before re-watering. Water less in winter when the plant is growing more slowly. Over-watering can cause root rot.

Food

Feed every second time you water through spring and summer with a quality liquid plant food. There is no need to feed this plant in winter.

Humidity

This plant enjoys humidity. Place in a bathroom and/or mist regularly with water. Remove dust from the leaves with a damp cloth to improve photosynthesis.
