Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’

Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’, commonly known as the Black ZZ Plant or ZZ Raven, is a striking dark-leaved form of the classic ZZ Plant. New shoots emerge fresh lime green before gradually deepening to glossy purple-black, creating a beautiful contrast between young and mature foliage.

Its upright, architectural growth and exceptionally easy-care nature make ‘Raven’ a particularly good choice for shelves, desks, bedrooms and lower-light rooms where many other houseplants may struggle.

Light & Position

Extremely adaptable, ZZ Raven will tolerate low light but grows best in moderate to bright, indirect light. A little gentle direct sun is usually fine, but avoid prolonged harsh sunlight, which can damage the foliage.

New leaves will naturally emerge green before darkening over time; this is a normal characteristic of the plant rather than a loss of colour.

Watering

Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess water drain away. ZZ Plants store water in thick underground rhizomes and are highly drought-tolerant, so it is safer to underwater than overwater.

Water particularly sparingly during winter and never allow the pot to sit in water.

Humidity & Temperature

Happy in normal household humidity and does not require misting. Keep in warm indoor conditions, ideally above approximately 15°C, and away from cold draughts.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at around half the recommended strength while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.

Leaf Care

Dust the glossy leaves occasionally with a soft damp cloth to keep them clean and allow the naturally dark finish to shine. Avoid using artificial leaf-shine products.
