Zamioculcas zamiifolia

Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly known as the ZZ Plant or Zanzibar Gem, is one of the easiest and most reliable houseplants you can grow. Its upright stems are lined with glossy, deep-green leaves, creating a clean architectural shape that works beautifully in homes, offices and lower-light spaces.

Supplied in a 14cm nursery pot at approximately 40cm tall, this is an established plant with plenty of presence while remaining exceptionally low maintenance. Thick underground rhizomes store water, allowing it to cope remarkably well with occasional missed waterings.

Light & Position

ZZ Plants are extremely adaptable and will tolerate anything from lower light to bright, indirect light. Growth is usually stronger and faster in a brighter position, although very dark rooms should still be avoided for long-term health.

A little gentle direct sun is generally fine, but avoid suddenly exposing a plant that has been grown in lower light to intense midday sunlight.

Watering

Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let all excess water drain away.

ZZ Plants store water in their thick rhizomes and are highly drought-tolerant, so it is much safer to underwater than to overwater. Water particularly sparingly during autumn and winter and never leave the pot standing in water.

Humidity & Temperature

Happy in normal household humidity and does not require regular misting. Keep in warm indoor conditions and away from prolonged cold draughts.

Feeding

Feed lightly approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Leaf Care

Wipe the glossy leaves occasionally with a soft damp cloth to remove dust and keep the foliage looking its best. Avoid artificial leaf-shine products.
