Tradescantia zebrina (hangpot)

Tradescantia zebrina, commonly known as the Silver Inch Plant, is a fast-growing trailing houseplant with dramatic foliage striped in silver and deep green, with rich purple colouring beneath the leaves.

Supplied as a generous 19cm hanging plant with approximately 40cm of trailing growth, this is an established specimen designed to create immediate impact. Its cascading stems look particularly effective from a ceiling hook, high shelf or plant stand.

Light & Position

Prefers bright, indirect or filtered light. Good light helps maintain the strongest silver and purple colouring, while plants kept in lower light may become greener and more stretched. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Allow the upper 1–2cm of compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Tradescantia grows quickly during spring and summer, so check the compost regularly, but avoid keeping it permanently wet.

Reduce watering during winter as growth slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Tradescantia zebrina adapts well to normal household humidity and does not require regular misting. Keep in warm indoor conditions and away from cold draughts.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.

Pruning & Keeping It Full

Regularly pinch or trim longer stems to encourage branching and keep the plant dense and bushy. Tradescantia naturally grows quickly, so occasional pruning helps prevent the centre of an older plant becoming sparse.

If any shoots revert to plain green, remove them to help preserve the strongest silver-striped growth.

Easy to Propagate

Tradescantia zebrina is extremely easy to propagate from stem cuttings. Cut below a node and root the cutting in water or suitable compost, or plant cuttings directly back into the original pot to create an even fuller display.
