Tradescantia ‘Tricolour’ (hangpot)

Tradescantia ‘Tricolour’ is a fast-growing trailing houseplant with richly patterned foliage in shades of green, silver and purple. The leaves catch the light beautifully, while the deep purple tones beneath add even more colour as the stems cascade from the pot.

Supplied as a generous 19cm hanging plant, this is an established specimen designed to create immediate impact. Allow the stems to trail naturally from a ceiling hook, high shelf or plant stand, or trim them regularly to maintain a fuller, denser shape.

Light & Position

Prefers bright, indirect or filtered light. Good light is particularly important for maintaining the strongest silver and purple colouring, while plants kept in lower light may become greener and more stretched. Avoid prolonged harsh midday sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Allow the upper 1–2cm of compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Tradescantia grows quickly during spring and summer and may need checking regularly, but avoid keeping the compost permanently wet.

Water the compost rather than the foliage where possible. Keeping the leaves relatively dry helps reduce spotting and damage.

Humidity & Temperature

Tradescantia ‘Tricolour’ adapts well to normal household humidity and does not require regular misting. Keep in warm indoor conditions and away from cold draughts.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.

Pruning & Keeping It Full

Tradescantia is naturally fast-growing and trailing, so older stems can eventually become long or sparse. Regularly pinch or trim the growing tips to encourage branching and keep the plant looking dense and bushy.

If any shoots lose their variegation and become entirely green, remove them promptly so that the more vigorous green growth does not begin to dominate the plant.

Easy to Propagate

Healthy stem cuttings root extremely easily. Simply trim a section of stem containing several nodes and root it in water or suitable compost. Cuttings can also be replanted into the original pot to create an even fuller hanging display.
