Strelitzia nicolai (100cm+)

Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise, is a bold, architectural houseplant with large, paddle-shaped green leaves held on tall upright stems. Its dramatic foliage creates an instant tropical feel and makes it an excellent statement plant for a bright living room, hallway or other larger indoor space.

Native to southern Africa, Strelitzia nicolai can grow into a substantial plant over time when given plenty of light and warmth. Mature plants can produce striking white and blue flowers, although flowering indoors is uncommon. Natural splits may develop in the large leaves as they mature and are part of the plant's character.

Light & Position

Give your Strelitzia plenty of bright light. A position close to a large window is ideal, and it can tolerate some direct sunlight once acclimatised. Turn the pot periodically to encourage balanced, upright growth.

Watering

Water regularly during spring and summer, allowing the top layer of compost to dry slightly between waterings. Always allow excess water to drain away and avoid leaving the plant sitting in water. Reduce watering during autumn and winter, allowing more of the compost to dry before watering again.

Humidity & Temperature

Keep in a warm room, ideally above 15°C, and away from cold draughts. Strelitzia appreciates moderate to higher humidity, particularly in warm conditions. Wiping the large leaves occasionally will also remove dust and help them make the most of available light.
