Strelitzia nicolai (60cm+)

Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the White Bird of Paradise, is one of the most dramatic indoor plants you can grow. This starter-sized plant already stands at around 60cm tall and will, with time, develop into an impressive architectural specimen with enormous banana-like leaves that create a bold tropical statement.

Native to South Africa, Strelitzia nicolai thrives in bright positions and is surprisingly easy to care for. Mature plants may eventually produce spectacular blue and white bird-like flowers, although this typically happens only when grown in ideal conditions over many years.

Place your Bird of Paradise plant in bright light, with some direct sun if possible. Water thoroughly once the top few centimetres of compost feel dry, allowing the soil to become slightly drier during winter. Keep above 15°C, feed every two weeks throughout spring and summer, and mist occasionally to help maintain healthy foliage.
