Strelitzia nicolai (140cm+)

Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise, is one of the most impressive indoor plants you can grow. With its enormous paddle-shaped leaves and dramatic upright growth habit, it instantly brings a bold, tropical feel to any room.

Native to South Africa, Strelitzia nicolai can eventually reach several metres in height when grown in ideal conditions, making it a true statement plant. Mature specimens may produce spectacular white and blue bird-like flowers, although this is rare indoors. Even without flowers, its striking architectural foliage makes it a favourite among interior designers and houseplant enthusiasts alike.

For best growth, place your Giant White Bird of Paradise in a bright position with plenty of indirect light. It will also tolerate some direct sun, particularly during the morning or evening. Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of compost feel dry, reducing watering during winter. Feed regularly throughout spring and summer to encourage strong, healthy growth.

As the plant matures, it is normal for older leaves to split naturally. This adaptation allows wind to pass through the foliage in its natural habitat and is not a sign of poor health.
