Snake Plant

Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Laurentii’, commonly known as the Snake Plant, is a striking houseplant with tall, upright leaves patterned in mottled grey-green and edged with golden yellow. Its strong vertical shape brings height, colour and structure to a room without taking up much space.
Supplied in a 14cm nursery pot at approximately 50cm tall, ‘Laurentii’ looks particularly good on a plant stand or sideboard. Its sculptural foliage and undemanding care make it an excellent choice for beginners, busy households and anyone who occasionally forgets to water.
What Makes ‘Laurentii’ Special?
The yellow margins of ‘Laurentii’ frame each patterned leaf, giving this classic Snake Plant its distinctive appearance. Its upright growth provides a lovely contrast to trailing plants and softer, leafy houseplants.
The thick, succulent leaves store water, helping the plant cope with dry periods between waterings. Botanically known as Dracaena trifasciata ‘Laurentii’, it is still widely sold under its familiar Sansevieria name.
Light & Position
Choose bright, indirect light for the strongest growth. Snake Plants also tolerate lower light levels, although growth will be slower and the compost will take longer to dry.
Some direct sunshine is suitable if introduced gradually. Avoid moving a plant straight from a shaded position into intense summer sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Allow the compost to dry out completely before watering thoroughly, then let all excess water drain away. Empty any water collected inside the decorative pot and avoid pouring water into the centre of the leaf clusters.
Water much less frequently during autumn and winter, particularly in cooler or shadier rooms. Check the compost before watering rather than following a fixed weekly schedule.
Overwatering is the most common problem with Snake Plants. If the compost still feels damp below the surface, wait before watering again.
Humidity & Temperature
‘Laurentii’ is comfortable in normal household humidity and does not need misting, making it well suited to living rooms, bedrooms and offices.
Keep it in a comfortably warm room, away from cold draughts and chilly window glass. Protect it from frost and avoid cold, damp conditions.
Feeding
Feed lightly during spring and summer while the plant is growing, using a cactus and succulent fertiliser according to the product instructions. Stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Growth & Care
Snake Plants gradually produce new shoots from the base, forming a fuller clump over time. Wipe the leaves occasionally with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and keep their markings looking their best.
They do not need frequent repotting, but should be moved into a slightly larger pot once the roots become crowded or begin to distort the nursery pot. Repot in spring using a free-draining cactus and succulent compost and a pot with drainage holes.
Remove any fully damaged or dead leaves at the base with clean scissors. Avoid trimming healthy leaf tips, as the cut ends will not regain their original pointed shape.
