Platycerium bifurcatum

Platycerium bifurcatum, commonly known as the Staghorn Fern, is one of the most distinctive and sculptural indoor ferns. Its branching, antler-like fronds emerge from rounded shield fronds at the base, creating a dramatic architectural shape that looks especially striking from a hanging position.

In the wild, Staghorn Ferns grow as epiphytes, attaching themselves to trees rather than rooting into the ground. This natural growth habit makes them particularly well suited to hanging displays, elevated shelves and eventually wall-mounted arrangements where their cascading fronds have room to develop.

Light & Position

Prefers bright, indirect or filtered light. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, particularly during summer, as this can scorch the fronds. A bright position with plenty of natural light but no harsh midday sun is ideal.

Watering

Allow the growing medium to become almost dry before watering thoroughly. For a potted Staghorn Fern, one of the easiest methods is to remove the plant from its decorative pot and soak or thoroughly saturate the root ball, then allow excess water to drain away before returning it to its position.

Avoid keeping the growing medium permanently wet, as epiphytic fern roots are particularly susceptible to prolonged waterlogging. Reduce watering during winter when growth slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Staghorn Ferns appreciate higher humidity and warm, stable conditions, ideally above approximately 15°C. A bright bathroom or kitchen can work particularly well. Keep away from cold draughts and direct heat sources such as radiators.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at the recommended dilution while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.

About the Shield Fronds

The rounded shield-like fronds at the base of the plant are an important part of its natural growth habit. As they age they may gradually turn brown and papery; this is normal and they should not be removed simply because they have changed colour.
