add a pot to fit this plant

Calathea ornata, commonly known as the Pinstripe Calathea, is an elegant tropical houseplant with broad, dark green leaves decorated with fine pink-white stripes radiating from the central vein. The undersides are flushed with deep purple, giving the plant an extra layer of colour as its leaves move throughout the day.

Now botanically known as Goeppertia ornata, this member of the Marantaceae or Prayer Plant family is native to tropical areas of Colombia and Venezuela. Its beautifully patterned foliage and upright, clump-forming habit make it a striking choice for living rooms, bedrooms and bright bathrooms.

Light & Position

Prefers moderate to bright, indirect or filtered light. Keep away from strong direct sunlight, which can fade or scorch the patterned foliage. It will tolerate some gentle shade, although the leaf markings are usually strongest in good indirect light.

Watering

Keep the compost lightly and evenly moist during spring and summer, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away rather than leaving the roots sitting in soggy compost. Reduce watering during winter as growth slows.

Calatheas can be sensitive to mineral build-up. If you experience persistent brown leaf tips and have particularly hard tap water, rainwater or filtered water may help.

Humidity & Temperature

The Pinstripe Calathea appreciates moderate to higher humidity and warm, stable indoor conditions. A bright kitchen or bathroom can work particularly well. Keep away from cold draughts, radiators and other direct heat sources, ideally at temperatures above approximately 16°C.

Regular misting is not essential. If the air in your home is very dry, grouping plants together or using a room humidifier is more effective for increasing humidity.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at the recommended dilution. Reduce or stop feeding during winter when growth slows.
