Pilea peperomioides

Pilea peperomioides, commonly known as the Chinese Money Plant or Pancake Plant, is a cheerful houseplant with smooth, round green leaves held on long, slender stems. Its neat, sculptural shape makes it perfect for shelves, desks, bedside tables and smaller spaces.

Native to southern China, Pilea peperomioides is easy to grow and particularly well known for producing small offsets or “pups” around the base of the parent plant, which can be left in place for a fuller look or separated and propagated.

Light & Position

Prefers moderate to bright, indirect light. Good light encourages compact, balanced growth, but avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Rotate the pot regularly to help the plant grow evenly towards the light.

Watering

Allow the upper 2–3cm of compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Avoid leaving the pot sitting in water, as constantly wet compost can lead to root problems. Reduce watering during winter as growth slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Happy in normal household humidity and warm indoor conditions. Keep away from cold draughts and direct heat sources.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.
