Pilea peperomioides, commonly known as the Chinese Money Plant, is a much-loved houseplant with perfectly round, coin-shaped leaves held on long, slender stems. Its fresh green foliage and clean, sculptural shape have made it a modern houseplant classic.

Supplied in a generous 15cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 30cm tall, this larger size offers a fuller and more established plant than smaller starter Pileas. It makes a brilliant feature on a side table, plant stand, shelf or windowsill while still remaining compact enough for most indoor spaces.

Why Is It Called the Chinese Money Plant?

The distinctive round leaves are often compared to coins, giving the plant its familiar Chinese Money Plant name. It is also sometimes called the Pancake Plant because of the unusually flat, circular foliage.

Pilea peperomioides is native to south-west China and became enormously popular as a houseplant thanks to its unusual appearance, easy-going nature and ability to produce lots of baby plants.

The Friendship Plant

Healthy Pilea plants frequently produce small offsets or pups around the base of the mother plant. Once these have grown sufficiently, they can be carefully separated and potted individually.

This habit of producing easily shared baby plants has helped give Pilea its reputation as a friendship plant, traditionally passed between friends and family.

Light & Position

Pilea peperomioides grows best in bright, indirect light. An east- or west-facing window is ideal, or position it slightly further back from a particularly bright south-facing window.

Avoid prolonged strong direct sunshine, particularly during summer, as this can scorch the foliage. Too little light can result in stretched growth with longer stems and smaller leaves.

Rotate for Even Growth

Pilea leaves naturally turn towards the light, so plants can gradually become fuller on one side than the other.

Rotate the pot by approximately a quarter turn every week or two to encourage a more balanced, upright shape.

Watering

Allow the upper few centimetres of compost to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly when required, then allow excess water to drain freely from the nursery pot.

Avoid leaving the plant standing in water, as continually saturated compost can lead to root problems. Watering will usually need to be reduced during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Normal household humidity is generally perfectly suitable for Pilea peperomioides, making it easier to accommodate than many more humidity-dependent tropical plants.

Keep it in a warm room away from cold draughts. Normal household temperatures are ideal, although the plant should be protected from prolonged exposure to temperatures below around 10°C.

Feeding

Feed regularly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser, following the manufacturer's recommended dilution.

Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when the plant is growing more slowly.

Repotting

Pilea is relatively quick-growing when happy and may eventually need moving into a larger container. Repot when the roots have substantially filled the nursery pot, usually moving up by only one pot size at a time.

Use a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost and ensure excess water can escape freely from the pot.

Why You'll Love It

  • Distinctive round, coin-shaped leaves
  • Generous 15cm plant with a fuller, established appearance
  • Fresh, bright green foliage
  • Easy-going and straightforward to care for
  • Produces baby plants that can be propagated and shared
  • Compact enough for shelves, tables and plant stands
  • Excellent choice for contemporary interiors
  • Generally considered pet-friendly

Pet & Child Safety

Pilea peperomioides is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. As with any houseplant, it is still sensible to discourage pets and young children from chewing or eating the foliage, as consuming plant material can cause digestive upset.
