Phlebodium aureum XL
Blue Star Fern
🚚 Free UK shipping on orders over £50 🪴
Phlebodium aureum ‘Blue Star’ XL, commonly known as the Blue Star Fern, is a substantial indoor fern with long, softly lobed fronds in distinctive blue-green tones. Its broad, slightly irregular foliage gives it a wonderfully relaxed, architectural shape that feels very different from the finer foliage of more traditional ferns.
Supplied in an impressive 24cm nursery pot at approximately 50cm+ tall, this XL specimen creates an immediate display and works particularly well as a floor-level plant, on a low stand or in a large decorative pot. The generous pot size produces a much fuller plant than our smaller Blue Star Ferns, with mature fronds spreading naturally outwards as well as upwards.
Light & Position
Give your Blue Star Fern bright, indirect or filtered light. It is more tolerant of moderate and lower light than many houseplants, but good indirect light will encourage stronger, healthier growth.
Avoid prolonged direct sunshine through glass, which can scorch the blue-green fronds. A bright bathroom, kitchen, bedroom or living space can all work well.
Watering
Keep the compost lightly and consistently moist, allowing the surface to dry slightly before watering again. Blue Star Ferns prefer more regular moisture than many houseplants but should never be left sitting in waterlogged compost.
Water thoroughly around the compost and allow excess water to drain away. Avoid repeatedly pouring water directly into the centre of the plant or over the surface rhizomes.
Reduce watering slightly during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
Humidity & Temperature
Blue Star Ferns appreciate moderate to higher humidity but adapt better to normal household conditions than many traditional ferns.
Keep away from cold draughts, radiators and other direct heat sources. Regular misting is not essential; good surrounding humidity and stable indoor conditions are more important.
Feeding
Feed lightly during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at reduced strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.
Growth & Care
Phlebodium grows from distinctive creeping rhizomes that sit at or close to the surface of the compost. These are a natural part of the plant and should not be buried deeply when repotting.
Fresh fronds gradually emerge from the rhizomes and unfurl into the plant's characteristic blue-green foliage. Older or damaged fronds can be removed close to the base to keep the plant looking fresh.
Given enough space and good conditions, Blue Star Fern can develop into a broad, impressive specimen with fronds spreading well beyond the edge of the nursery pot.

Care Instructions
Light
Prefers indirect bright light and will tolerate direct sunlight in the morning or evening. If positioned in a shadier spot the plant will offer less growth and require less water.
Water
Thoroughly water, then allow the top few centimeters of compost to dry before re-watering. Water less in winter when the plant is growing more slowly. Over-watering can cause root rot.
Food
Feed every second time you water through spring and summer with a quality liquid plant food. There is no need to feed this plant in winter.
Humidity
This plant enjoys humidity. Place in a bathroom and/or mist regularly with water. Remove dust from the leaves with a damp cloth to improve photosynthesis.
