Phlebodium aureum ‘Blue Star’, commonly known as the Blue Star Fern, is a distinctive indoor fern with unusual blue-green fronds and a naturally relaxed, architectural shape. Its wavy, glaucous foliage grows from creeping, furry rhizomes and gives the plant a sculptural look that feels very different from more traditional feathery ferns.

More forgiving than many indoor ferns, the Blue Star Fern tolerates lower light and slightly drier compost better than most, making it an excellent choice if you love ferns but want something a little easier to manage.

Light & Position

Prefers bright, indirect or filtered light but will tolerate moderate light and some shade. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the blue-green fronds. An east- or north-facing position can work particularly well.

Watering

Allow the compost to become almost dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Blue Star Ferns dislike sitting in permanently wet compost, so good drainage is important. Reduce watering during winter as growth slows.

If you have particularly hard tap water, rainwater or filtered water can be helpful, as epiphytic ferns generally prefer slightly acidic growing conditions.

Humidity & Temperature

Prefers moderate to higher humidity and warm indoor conditions, ideally above approximately 16°C. A bright bathroom or kitchen can work particularly well. Keep away from cold draughts, radiators and other direct heat sources.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.

Care Instructions

Light

Prefers indirect bright light and will tolerate direct sunlight in the morning or evening. If positioned in a shadier spot the plant will offer less growth and require less water.

Water

Thoroughly water, then allow the top few centimeters of compost to dry before re-watering. Water less in winter when the plant is growing more slowly. Over-watering can cause root rot.

Food

Feed every second time you water through spring and summer with a quality liquid plant food. There is no need to feed this plant in winter.

Humidity

This plant enjoys humidity. Place in a bathroom and/or mist regularly with water. Remove dust from the leaves with a damp cloth to improve photosynthesis.
