Philodendron scandens, now botanically accepted as Philodendron hederaceum and commonly known as the Heartleaf Philodendron, is a classic trailing houseplant with soft, deep green, heart-shaped leaves. Simple, elegant and exceptionally easy to live with, it is a reliable choice for adding lush greenery to shelves, plant stands and hanging displays.
Fast-growing and adaptable, the Heartleaf Philodendron can be left to trail naturally or trained upwards on a moss or coir pole for a more structured climbing display.
Light & Position
Prefers moderate to bright, indirect light but will tolerate some shade. Growth will usually be faster and fuller in good indirect light. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.
Watering
Allow the upper 2–3cm of compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Avoid keeping the compost permanently wet. Reduce watering slightly during winter as growth slows.
Humidity & Temperature
Philodendron scandens adapts well to normal household humidity and warm indoor conditions. Keep away from cold draughts and direct heat sources.
Trailing or Climbing?
Left unsupported, the Heartleaf Philodendron develops long trailing stems that look particularly effective cascading from shelves and hanging planters. Alternatively, train it upwards on a moss or coir pole to encourage more upright growth and increasingly mature foliage.
Feeding
Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.
