Philodendron scandens (hangpot)

Philodendron scandens, now botanically accepted as Philodendron hederaceum and commonly known as the Heartleaf Philodendron or Sweetheart Plant, is a classic trailing houseplant with glossy, deep green, heart-shaped leaves.

This larger 15cm hanging-pot plant is ideal for creating an established cascading display from a ceiling hook, high shelf or plant stand. Fast-growing, adaptable and forgiving, it can also be trained upwards on a moss or coir pole if you prefer a climbing plant.

Light & Position

Prefers moderate to bright, indirect light but will tolerate some shade. Growth will usually be faster and fuller in good indirect light. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Allow the upper 2–3cm of compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Avoid keeping the compost permanently wet. Reduce watering slightly during winter as growth slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Philodendron scandens adapts well to normal household humidity and warm indoor conditions. Keep away from cold draughts and direct heat sources.

Trailing or Climbing?

Leave the removable hanger attached for a cascading display, or remove it and position the plant on a high shelf or plant stand. Alternatively, train the stems upwards on a moss or coir pole to encourage more upright growth and increasingly mature foliage.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.
