The Pepin Olla is a natural terracotta self-watering system for houseplants. Bury it in the compost, fill it with water and the porous ceramic gradually releases moisture directly around the plant's roots.

Ideal for medium and larger houseplants in pots from around 15cm diameter, busy plant owners and keeping plants watered while you're away for a few days.

Based on an ancient irrigation technique, the Pepin Olla makes keeping houseplants consistently watered beautifully simple. As the surrounding compost dries, water gradually passes through the microporous terracotta into the soil, providing a slow supply of moisture around the root zone.

Simply refill the Olla when it is empty – typically around once a week, although this will vary depending on the plant, pot size, temperature and growing conditions.

Handmade by ceramic artisans in Portugal, each Pepin Olla is also designed to look good amongst your plants, making it a particularly lovely and practical gift for a houseplant lover.

Why choose a Pepin Olla?

  • Natural self-watering – porous terracotta gradually releases water into the surrounding compost
  • Ideal for pots 15cm+ – Pepin recommends its classic Ollas for medium and larger plant pots
  • Useful while you're away – helps keep houseplants hydrated during short trips and holidays
  • Easy plant care – simply bury, fill and refill when empty
  • Made from natural materials – 100% natural terracotta with a cork stopper
  • Handmade in Portugal – crafted by ceramic artisans near Leiria
  • A great gift for plant lovers – practical plant care that also looks beautiful amongst houseplants

How to use your Pepin Olla

Gently bury the Olla in the plant's compost, positioning it close to the plant and leaving the neck and opening above the soil.

Fill it with water and replace the cork stopper. The natural porosity of the terracotta allows moisture to gradually pass into the surrounding compost as the plant uses it.

Check the Olla periodically and refill it once empty. In normal indoor conditions this is often around once a week, although thirstier plants, warmer rooms and different pot sizes can change how quickly the water is used.

Occasionally rinse the Olla with clean water to help remove any mineral build-up.

Which plants and pot sizes is it suitable for?

Pepin recommends its classic Ollas for plant pots measuring 15cm in diameter or more. For pots smaller than 15cm, Pepin's Mini Ollas are designed to take up less space in the compost.

Ollas are particularly useful for common houseplants that appreciate regular moisture, including Monstera, pothos, peace lilies and Ficus.

Every plant is different, so continue to check the compost and adjust your watering routine to suit the individual plant. Plants such as cacti and many succulents prefer their compost to dry considerably between waterings and may be better suited to conventional watering.

FAQs

What is an Olla?
An Olla is a porous clay vessel used for slow irrigation. When filled with water and buried in soil, moisture gradually passes through the terracotta into the surrounding compost.

How does a Pepin Olla work?
Fill the Olla with water and the microporous terracotta gradually releases moisture directly into the surrounding soil. As the Olla empties, simply fill it again.

How often do I need to refill a Pepin Olla?
Pepin recommends filling it approximately once a week. How long a refill lasts will depend on the plant, pot size, temperature and growing conditions, so check yours regularly until you get a feel for how quickly your plant uses the water.

Can I use a Pepin Olla while I'm on holiday?
Yes. An Olla can help keep houseplants hydrated while you're away for a short period. Fill it before leaving; for longer trips, we'd still recommend making appropriate arrangements for your plants rather than relying on a single refill.

What size plant pot is a Pepin Olla suitable for?
The classic Pepin Olla is recommended for pots around 15cm in diameter or larger. For pots smaller than 15cm, Pepin makes Mini Ollas specifically for smaller plants.

Which houseplants can I use it with?
It works particularly well for houseplants that appreciate regular moisture, such as Monstera, pothos, peace lilies and Ficus. Always take the watering requirements of the individual plant into account.

Is a Pepin Olla suitable for cacti and succulents?
Plants that prefer to dry substantially between waterings generally need a different watering routine. For cacti and many succulents, we would usually recommend conventional watering instead.

Do you deliver Pepin Ollas across the UK?
