Oxalis triangularis 'Mijke'

Oxalis triangularis ‘Mijke’, commonly known as the Purple False Shamrock, is a striking houseplant with rich purple, triangular leaves held on slender stems. The foliage naturally opens in brighter conditions and folds together in lower light and at night, giving the plant an unusually animated character.

During the growing season, delicate pale pink to whitish-purple flowers can appear above the foliage, creating a beautiful contrast against the deep purple leaves.

Light & Position

Prefers moderate to bright light, with some gentle direct sun usually tolerated. Good light helps maintain strong purple colouring and compact growth. Avoid prolonged harsh midday sun through glass, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Water when the upper layer of compost has begun to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Aim for moist but well-drained compost while the plant is actively growing rather than keeping it permanently wet.

Dormancy

Oxalis grows from small underground bulbs and may naturally die back for a period, particularly after a flush of growth or during the darker months. If the foliage begins to yellow and disappear, reduce watering and allow the plant to rest.

Keep the compost only barely moist during dormancy. When fresh shoots begin to appear, resume normal watering and move the plant back into good light.

Humidity & Temperature

Normal household humidity is perfectly suitable. Keep in a bright room with stable temperatures and away from very hot radiators or prolonged cold draughts.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Stop feeding during dormancy.
