Opuntia microdasys, commonly known as the Bunny Ear Cactus, is a distinctive cactus native to the arid regions of northern and central Mexico. Rather than producing a single stem, it develops pairs of flat, oval pads that resemble rabbit ears, creating its charming and unmistakable silhouette.
Although it appears soft and fuzzy, the tiny golden or white dots covering each pad are clusters of fine barbed spines called glochids, which can easily detach if touched. Handle with care, but enjoy this architectural houseplant from a safe distance where its sculptural form can be fully appreciated.
Easy to care for and wonderfully drought tolerant, Opuntia microdasys thrives in a bright, sunny position with free-draining cactus compost. Water only when the compost has dried out completely, reducing watering to a minimum during winter. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a cactus fertiliser to encourage healthy new growth.
