add a pot to fit this plant

Hoya ‘Rosita’ is a distinctive trailing Hoya with narrow, slightly pointed leaves edged in deep maroon to almost black. In brighter light, the foliage can develop rich bronze, red and burgundy tones, giving the plant a beautifully warm, sun-stressed appearance.

‘Rosita’ is a cultivated hybrid between Hoya wayetii × Hoya tsangii, combining the slender foliage and dark margins of its parentage with a naturally elegant trailing habit. Its long stems look particularly good cascading from a shelf or elevated planter, but can also be trained around a hoop or other support as the plant matures.

Light & Position

Give ‘Rosita’ plenty of bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning or evening sun is especially useful for bringing out the characteristic bronze, red and burgundy tones in the foliage.

Avoid prolonged harsh midday sun through glass, which can scorch the leaves. Plants kept in lower light will usually remain greener and may grow more slowly.

Watering

Allow the upper part of the compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then let all excess water drain away. Hoya ‘Rosita’ prefers an airy, free-draining growing medium and should never be left sitting in waterlogged compost.

Water more sparingly during autumn and winter as growth slows, while avoiding prolonged complete dryness.

Humidity & Temperature

‘Rosita’ appreciates warm, stable indoor conditions and moderate humidity, but adapts well to normal household conditions. Regular misting is not essential.

Keep away from cold draughts and direct heat sources.

Feeding

Feed lightly approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Flowers

Mature plants grown in good light can produce rounded clusters of dark red, waxy flowers with a soft, slightly fuzzy appearance. The flowers are sweetly fragrant and may produce small droplets of nectar.

After flowering, avoid removing the short flower spurs, as Hoyas can bloom again from the same points in future.

Trailing or Climbing?

Hoya ‘Rosita’ can be grown either trailing or climbing. Allow the stems to cascade naturally from a shelf or planter, or train them around a hoop or other support for a more upright display.

Why You'll Love It

  • Narrow deep-green leaves with dramatic dark margins
  • Bronze, red and burgundy colouring in brighter light
  • Distinctive hybrid of Hoya wayetii × Hoya tsangii
  • Can be grown trailing or climbing
  • Potential for fragrant dark red flowers when mature
  • Easy to style on shelves, plant stands and supports
  • A particularly distinctive choice for Hoya collectors

Pet & Child Safety

Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making ‘Rosita’ a good choice for pet-friendly homes.

Care Instructions

Light

Place in bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning or evening sun can encourage flowering, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sun, which may scorch the leaves.

Water

Water thoroughly, then allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry before watering again. This plant stores moisture in its fleshy leaves and prefers to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during winter.

Food

Feed once a month during spring and summer with a quality liquid houseplant fertiliser. Regular feeding encourages healthy growth, strong roots and more reliable flowering.

Humidity

This plant is happy in average household humidity but appreciates slightly higher humidity where possible. Good air circulation is equally important for healthy growth. Avoid excessive misting.
