Hoya polyneura

Hoya polyneura, commonly known as the Fishtail Hoya, is an unusual trailing Hoya with elongated green leaves marked by distinctive dark veining. The strong herringbone pattern gives each leaf a sculptural, almost fish-tail appearance, making this one of the most recognisable foliage Hoyas.

Supplied in a 14cm hanging pot with typically around 30cm of trailing growth, it makes an immediate display and looks especially effective from a high shelf, plant hanger or elevated planter. As a living plant, individual specimens will naturally vary slightly in shape, fullness and trailing length.

Light & Position

Give Hoya polyneura plenty of bright, indirect or filtered light. Good light encourages healthy, compact growth and gives the plant the best chance of flowering, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sun through glass, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Water when the upper layer of compost has dried, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. Hoya polyneura prefers an airy, free-draining growing medium and should never be left sitting in waterlogged compost.

Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth slows, but avoid leaving the plant completely dry for prolonged periods.

Humidity & Temperature

Hoya polyneura appreciates moderate to higher humidity and warm, stable indoor conditions. Keep away from cold draughts, radiators and other direct heat sources.

Regular misting is not essential; good surrounding humidity and airflow are more important.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing. A balanced liquid houseplant feed or suitable orchid fertiliser can be used at reduced strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Flowers

Mature plants grown in good light can produce clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers. As with other Hoyas, avoid removing the short flower spurs after blooming, as future flowers may develop from the same points.

Trailing Growth

Hoya polyneura has a naturally trailing habit and is particularly well suited to hanging displays. Its cascading stems can also be gently guided around a support if you prefer a more structured shape.
