Hoya crassipetiolata ‘Splash’

Hoya crassipetiolata ‘Splash’ is a beautifully patterned collector Hoya with elongated green leaves, distinctive dark veining and irregular silver splash markings scattered across the surface. Every leaf develops slightly differently, giving the plant a wonderfully individual, almost hand-painted appearance.

Supplied in an 11cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 20cm tall, this is an attractive young plant with plenty of potential. As it matures, the stems naturally climb or trail and the foliage becomes increasingly impressive, making it perfect for training around a support or allowing to cascade from a shelf.

Light & Position

Hoya crassipetiolata ‘Splash’ grows best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of good natural light will encourage stronger growth and help maintain its attractive silver patterning.

A little gentle morning or evening sunshine is usually beneficial, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sun through glass, particularly during summer, as this can mark or scorch the leaves.

Watering

Allow much of the growing medium to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. The thick leaves store some moisture, so this Hoya is much more tolerant of being slightly dry than of sitting in permanently wet compost.

Water more regularly while the plant is actively growing during spring and summer, then reduce watering during the cooler, darker months.

Humidity & Temperature

Hoya crassipetiolata comes from a humid tropical environment and appreciates moderate to higher humidity, particularly when actively growing. It can nevertheless adapt well to normal household conditions provided it is kept warm and away from very dry heat sources.

Aim for warm indoor temperatures, ideally around 18–26°C, and protect the plant from cold draughts. Avoid allowing temperatures to fall much below 15°C for prolonged periods.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing. A balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser or orchid feed applied at a reduced strength works well.

Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Growth & Care

Hoya crassipetiolata ‘Splash’ has a natural climbing and trailing habit. It can be trained around a hoop, trellis or other support, or allowed to trail naturally from a shelf or hanging planter.

When repotting, choose an airy, free-draining growing medium. A chunky mix containing materials such as orchid bark, perlite and coir is ideal, reflecting the epiphytic way Hoyas often grow in their natural habitat.

Hoyas generally prefer being slightly snug in their pots, so there is no need to rush to repot. When the time comes, move up only one pot size rather than placing the plant into a significantly larger container.

Flowers

Mature plants can produce clusters of delicate cream-white, waxy flowers. Good light, warmth and consistent care will give the plant the best chance of flowering as it matures.

Once your Hoya has flowered, do not cut off the short flower stalks, known as peduncles. Hoyas can produce new flowers from the same points again in future.
