Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ Variegata

Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ Variegata is a wonderfully unusual miniature Hoya with thick, tightly curled leaves packed closely along its stems to create its distinctive rope-like growth. Cream and pale yellow variegation contrasts beautifully with the green foliage, while fresh growth can develop attractive pink tones in brighter light.

Supplied in a tiny 6cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 8cm tall, this is a young plant with plenty of growing ahead of it. Hoya ‘Compacta’ is naturally slow growing, so even small plants take time to develop their characteristic twisted foliage and sculptural form.

Light & Position

Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ Variegata grows best in bright, indirect light. Good light is particularly important for maintaining the pale variegation and encouraging compact, healthy growth.

A little gentle morning or evening sunshine can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged strong midday sun through glass, which may scorch the lighter areas of the leaves.

Watering

Allow much of the growing medium to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. Its thick, fleshy leaves store moisture, so this Hoya is much more tolerant of being slightly dry than of sitting in wet compost.

Water more regularly during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing, then reduce watering during autumn and winter. Take particular care not to overwater such a small nursery pot.

Humidity & Temperature

Hoya ‘Compacta’ appreciates moderate humidity but adapts well to normal household conditions. There is no need for regular misting if the plant is otherwise kept warm and healthy.

Normal indoor temperatures suit it well. Aim for around 16–24°C during active growth and protect it from cold draughts and prolonged low temperatures.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser or orchid feed.

Hoyas need relatively little fertiliser, especially while young, so avoid feeding heavily. Reduce or stop feeding during the cooler, darker months.

Growth & Care

Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ Variegata is naturally slow growing, eventually producing increasingly long, twisted stems covered in dense curls of foliage. As the stems lengthen, they can be allowed to trail naturally from a shelf or hanging planter.

When repotting, use an airy, free-draining growing medium containing materials such as orchid bark and perlite. Hoyas are happy being relatively snug in their pots, so only move up one pot size when necessary.

The tightly curled foliage can occasionally provide hiding places for mealybugs, so it is worth checking between the leaves from time to time as part of your normal plant care routine.

Flowers

Mature plants can produce clusters of beautiful pale pink, waxy, star-shaped flowers with a sweet fragrance. This is a patient plant and may take time to reach flowering maturity, particularly when purchased at this miniature size.

Once your Hoya does flower, leave the short flower stalks, known as peduncles, in place after the blooms fade. Hoyas can produce fresh flowers from the same points again in future.
