add a pot to fit this plant

Hoya australis is a vigorous climbing and trailing houseplant with long twining stems and thick, glossy green leaves. This is the classic green form of Hoya australis, prized for its lush foliage, easy-going nature and beautiful fragrant flowers when mature.

Its flexible stems can be allowed to trail naturally from a shelf or elevated planter, or trained around a hoop, trellis or other support for a more upright display.

Light & Position

Give Hoya australis plenty of bright, indirect or filtered light. Good light encourages healthy, compact growth and gives the plant the best chance of flowering. Some gentle morning or evening sun is usually beneficial, but avoid prolonged harsh summer sunlight that could scorch the foliage.

Watering

Allow the upper few centimetres of compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Hoya australis has thick leaves and prefers an airy, free-draining growing medium rather than constantly wet compost.

Reduce watering during autumn and winter as growth slows, while avoiding prolonged complete dryness.

Humidity & Temperature

Hoya australis appreciates moderate humidity but adapts well to normal household conditions. Regular misting is not essential. Keep in a warm position away from cold draughts and direct heat sources.

Feeding

Feed lightly approximately every two weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid feed or suitable orchid fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.

Flowers

Mature plants grown in good light can produce rounded clusters of fragrant, waxy white star-shaped flowers with contrasting deep red centres.

After flowering, avoid removing the short flower spurs, as Hoyas can produce new flowers from the same points in future.

Trailing or Climbing?

Hoya australis is naturally a twining climber. Indoors it can be trained around a hoop, trellis or other support, or simply allowed to cascade from a high shelf or planter. Given support, established plants can develop long, vigorous stems over time.

  • Thick, glossy green foliage
  • Classic green form of Hoya australis
  • Can be grown trailing or climbing
  • Produces beautifully fragrant white flowers when mature

Care Instructions

Light

Place in bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning or evening sun can encourage flowering, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sun, which may scorch the leaves.

Water

Water thoroughly, then allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry before watering again. This plant stores moisture in its fleshy leaves and prefers to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during winter.

Food

Feed once a month during spring and summer with a quality liquid houseplant fertiliser. Regular feeding encourages healthy growth, strong roots and more reliable flowering.

Humidity

This plant is happy in average household humidity but appreciates slightly higher humidity where possible. Good air circulation is equally important for healthy growth. Avoid excessive misting.
