Heteropanax chinensis (34cm pot)

Heteropanax chinensis is a beautiful indoor tree with a strong, textured trunk and a dense canopy of fresh green, oval leaflets. It has that rare “outdoor tree indoors” look, bringing height, softness and structure to a room without feeling heavy.

Sometimes sold as the Indoor Quince Tree, Heteropanax is a fast grower in the right spot and a brilliant choice if you want a statement plant that still feels calm and natural. Place it in bright, indirect light for the healthiest growth and the best leaf colour. It can tolerate some gentle sun, but avoid prolonged direct sunshine which can stress the foliage.

Water with care. Allow the compost to dry a little between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess drain away. Reduce watering in winter. Heteropanax can drop a few leaves when it is moved, especially in cooler months, but it is quick to replace them once it settles back in.

• Light: Bright, indirect light, a lightly sunny spot is fine

• Feed: Monthly in spring and summer
