add a pot to fit this plant

Epipremnum aureum, commonly known as Golden Pothos or Devil's Ivy, is an easy-care houseplant with glossy, heart-shaped green leaves marbled and streaked with golden yellow. Its long leafy stems can be left to trail from a shelf or hanging planter, or trained upwards on a moss or coir pole for a more upright display.

Native to the Society Islands in French Polynesia, Golden Pothos is adaptable, fast-growing and particularly well suited to beginners. It tolerates a range of indoor conditions, although good indirect light will encourage stronger growth and more pronounced golden variegation.

Light & Position

Prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate some shade. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage. In lower light the plant will usually grow more slowly and may produce less variegated leaves.

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during winter and avoid keeping the compost permanently wet.

Humidity & Temperature

Golden Pothos is well suited to normal indoor conditions. Keep in a warm room away from cold draughts and direct heat sources. Moderate humidity is beneficial, and the leaves can be wiped occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Trailing or Climbing?

Golden Pothos naturally climbs using aerial roots but is equally attractive when allowed to trail. Grow it from a hanging planter or high shelf for cascading foliage, or give the stems a moss or coir pole for support if you prefer a taller, more upright plant.

Why you'll love it

  • Easy-care houseplant ideal for beginners
  • Attractive green and golden variegated foliage
  • Can be grown as either a trailing or climbing plant
  • Tolerates some shade and a range of indoor conditions
  • Fast-growing with relatively simple care requirements

Pet & Child Safety

Golden Pothos is harmful if eaten, so keep it out of reach of pets and young children.

Care Instructions

Light

Prefers indirect bright light but can tolerate a shadier spot in your home where it will grow more slowly. Too much direct sunlight can result in scorched leaves.

Water

Water thoroughly, then allow the top 2–3cm of compost to dry before watering again. Avoid allowing the compost to become completely dry or waterlogged.

Food

Feed every second time you water through spring and summer with a quality liquid plant food. There is no need to feed this plant in winter.

Humidity

This plant enjoys humidity. Place in a bathroom and/or mist every so often with water. Remove dust from the leaves with a damp cloth to improve photosynthesis.
