Ornamental Grass
🚚 Free UK shipping on orders over £50 🪴
Festuca glauca Sunrise (‘Miedzianobrody’) is a compact evergreen ornamental grass with fine, narrow foliage and an unusual seasonal colour change. The neat grassy mound starts blue-green to dark green, before the tips develop warm copper-orange tones through autumn and winter.
In summer, slender copper-red flower stems rise above the foliage carrying airy golden flower heads, giving the plant movement, texture and an almost glowing effect in the sunlight.
Supplied in a substantial 17cm nursery pot, Sunrise is ideal for patio pots, gravel gardens, contemporary planting schemes and sunny garden borders.
Light & Position
Grow outdoors in full sun for the strongest foliage colour and best flowering. It can tolerate some light partial shade, but a sunny position will usually give the most compact growth and strongest copper tones.
Soil & Planting
Plant in free-draining soil. Festuca performs especially well in gravelly, sandy or relatively lean soils and does not need rich, heavily fertilised ground.
If growing in a container, use a free-draining compost and make sure excess water can escape easily.
Watering
Water regularly while the plant is establishing, allowing the soil or compost to begin drying between waterings. Once established, Festuca Sunrise is relatively drought-tolerant.
Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during winter, as constantly wet soil can cause the centre of the plant to deteriorate.
Seasonal Colour
The foliage forms a compact mound around 20–30cm tall. During summer, copper-red flowering stems rise above the plant and can reach approximately 50–70cm.
As temperatures fall in autumn, the foliage tips begin developing distinctive copper-orange and reddish tones, extending the plant's interest well beyond the summer flowering period.
Care & Pruning
Festuca requires very little maintenance. In spring, gently comb through the foliage to remove old or dead leaves and trim away any damaged growth.
Older clumps can gradually become sparse in the centre. Dividing established plants every few years helps maintain a fresh, compact shape.
