Epipremnum aureum (hangpot)
Golden Pothos
🚚 Free UK shipping on orders over £50 🪴
Epipremnum aureum, commonly known as Golden Pothos or Devil's Ivy, is one of the easiest and most rewarding trailing houseplants to grow. Its glossy, heart-shaped green leaves are splashed and streaked with golden-yellow variegation, creating a lush cascade of foliage from its 15cm hanging pot.
Fast-growing, adaptable and wonderfully forgiving, Golden Pothos is an excellent choice for beginners as well as experienced plant owners. Allow the stems to trail naturally from a hanging planter or high shelf, or train them upwards around a support for a completely different look.
Light & Position
Prefers moderate to bright, indirect light but will tolerate some shade. Brighter indirect light encourages stronger golden variegation and more vigorous growth, while plants kept in lower light may become greener and grow more slowly. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.
Watering
Allow the upper 2–3cm of compost to dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Golden Pothos is much more tolerant of occasional dryness than permanently wet compost, so avoid allowing the pot to sit in water. Reduce watering during winter as growth slows.
Humidity & Temperature
Epipremnum aureum adapts well to normal household humidity and does not require particularly humid conditions. Keep in normal warm indoor temperatures and away from cold draughts and direct heat sources.
Feeding
Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.
Trailing or Climbing?
Golden Pothos naturally climbs in the wild using aerial roots, but indoors it is equally attractive allowed to trail. Leave the hanger attached for a cascading display, remove it and position the plant on a high shelf, or train the stems up a moss or coir pole if you prefer an upright plant with increasingly substantial foliage.
Why You'll Love It
- Glossy green leaves with distinctive golden variegation
- Fast-growing trailing stems
- Excellent for hanging planters and high shelves
- Can also be trained as a climbing houseplant
- Tolerates a range of indoor light conditions
- Easy-going and particularly suitable for beginners
Pet & Child Safety
Epipremnum aureum is a member of the Araceae family and can be harmful if eaten. Keep out of reach of pets and young children.

Care Instructions
Light
Prefers indirect bright light but can tolerate a shadier spot in your home where it will grow more slowly. Too much direct sunlight can result in scorched leaves.
Water
Water thoroughly, then allow the top 2–3cm of compost to dry before watering again. Avoid allowing the compost to become completely dry or waterlogged.
Food
Feed every second time you water through spring and summer with a quality liquid plant food. There is no need to feed this plant in winter.
Humidity
This plant enjoys humidity. Place in a bathroom and/or mist every so often with water. Remove dust from the leaves with a damp cloth to improve photosynthesis.
