Dryopteris erythrosora, commonly known as the Autumn Fern, is a beautiful, semi-evergreen fern valued for its warm, coppery-red new growth that gradually matures to soft green.
This subtle colour shift brings seasonal interest and warmth to shaded areas, making it a more characterful alternative to traditional green ferns. Its gently arching fronds create a soft, natural look that works perfectly in woodland-style planting, shaded borders and containers.
It’s an easy, reliable choice for adding texture and movement to darker spaces, pairing beautifully with hostas, heuchera and other shade-loving plants.
Position: Partial to full shade. Avoid strong, direct afternoon sun.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods.
Soil: Moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
Care: Low maintenance. Remove old or damaged fronds in spring to allow fresh growth to shine.
