Dracaena fragrans ‘Janet Craig’ is a beautifully architectural houseplant with masses of glossy, deep green foliage arranged around tall, upright stems. Its clean, sculptural shape and rich green leaves make it a particularly elegant floor plant for bringing height and greenery to a living room, hallway, bedroom or office.

Supplied in a substantial 21cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 120cm+ tall, ‘Janet Craig’ makes an immediate impact without requiring particularly demanding care. It is also more tolerant of lower indoor light levels than many large tropical houseplants, making it a useful choice for positions where other statement plants may struggle.

What Makes ‘Janet Craig’ Special?

‘Janet Craig’ is a classic cultivar of Dracaena fragrans, grown for its particularly lush solid dark green foliage. The broad, glossy leaves form dense clusters around the stems, giving the plant a full but distinctly upright appearance.

Its combination of height, relatively narrow footprint and tolerance of typical indoor conditions makes it especially useful as a large floor plant where you want plenty of greenery without a plant spreading too widely into the room.

Light & Position

Dracaena ‘Janet Craig’ grows best in bright to moderate indirect light, but is well known for tolerating lower light levels better than many tropical houseplants.

Growth may be slower in a darker position, so some natural daylight is still important. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunshine through glass, which can scorch or bleach the leaves.

Watering

Allow the upper few centimetres of compost to dry before watering again. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain freely from the nursery pot.

Dracaena are much more tolerant of being slightly too dry than being continually waterlogged, so avoid leaving the nursery pot standing in water. Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Dracaena can also be sensitive to minerals and salts present in some tap water. If persistent brown leaf tips develop, using rainwater or filtered water may help.

Humidity & Temperature

Normal household humidity is generally suitable, although very dry air can contribute to brown leaf tips. Keep the plant away from directly beside radiators or other intense sources of dry heat.

Warm, stable household temperatures suit ‘Janet Craig’ well. Aim for approximately 18–25°C and protect the plant from cold draughts and sudden drops in temperature.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser, following the dilution instructions on the packaging.

Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Repotting

Large Dracaena do not need frequent repotting and often grow happily when relatively snug in their container. Repot when the roots have substantially filled the nursery pot, usually moving up by only one pot size at a time.

Use a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost and always ensure excess water can escape freely from the pot.

Brown Leaf Tips

Occasional brown tips are relatively common on Dracaena and do not necessarily mean the plant is unhealthy. They can be caused by very dry air, inconsistent watering or a build-up of minerals and fertiliser salts in the compost.

Trim badly browned tips if required, following the natural shape of the leaf, and review watering conditions if browning becomes widespread.
