Dicksonia antarctica is a spectacular tree fern that brings a lush, architectural feel to shaded gardens and outdoor spaces. With its dramatic crown of arching, finely divided dark green fronds emerging from a thick, fibrous trunk, it creates an instant tropical woodland effect.
Native to Australia and Tasmania, this slow-growing fern is one of the hardiest tree ferns and is well suited to sheltered UK gardens. Over time it can form a striking trunk and may eventually reach several metres in height, making it a beautiful long-term feature plant.
Plant in moist, well-drained soil in a sheltered shady position. Keep the trunk and soil consistently moist during the growing season by watering regularly. In winter, protect the crown by packing it with straw or wrapping with horticultural fleece during very cold weather.
