Cryptanthus 'Red Star’

Cryptanthus ‘Red Star’, commonly known as an Earth Star, is a compact tropical houseplant with colourful, pointed leaves arranged in a low, star-shaped rosette. Its rich red and pink tones bring a striking splash of colour to small plant displays.

Supplied in a 6cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 8cm tall, ‘Red Star’ is ideal for bright shelves, desks and terrarium planting. Its spreading shape makes it particularly attractive viewed from above, where the star-like arrangement of its leaves can be fully appreciated.

What Makes ‘Red Star’ Special?

Part of the Bromeliaceae family, Cryptanthus are terrestrial bromeliads, growing with their roots in the ground rather than clinging to tree branches. Their colourful foliage provides the main display, with small flowers tucked close to the centre of the plant.

The gently wavy leaf edges and distinctive rosette give ‘Red Star’ plenty of character without taking up much space.

Light & Position

Choose bright, indirect light to maintain strong foliage colour. Protect from harsh direct sunshine, which can scorch or bleach the leaves.

Watering

Allow the compost surface to begin drying before watering, keeping the root ball lightly moist rather than letting it dry out completely.

Water the compost directly and allow excess water to drain. Avoid leaving water standing in the centre of the plant or inside its decorative pot. Reduce watering in winter as growth slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Cryptanthus appreciates moderate to high humidity and consistent warmth. Keep above approximately 16°C, away from cold draughts and radiators.

A bright bathroom or suitably maintained terrarium can provide a good environment. Daily misting is not essential and should not replace watering the compost.

Feeding

Feed lightly, approximately monthly during spring and summer, with a well-diluted liquid houseplant fertiliser. Follow the product instructions and avoid overfeeding this small plant.

Repotting

Repot when the roots fill the container, using an airy, free-draining compost suitable for terrestrial bromeliads. Choose a pot only slightly larger, with drainage holes.
