Consolea rubescens, better known as the Roadkill Cactus, is one of the most unusual cacti you can grow. Its flattened, irregular pads give it an extraordinary sculptural appearance, making it a real talking point and a favourite amongst collectors of rare and unusual houseplants.
Native to the Caribbean, this fascinating cactus develops broad, bumpy stems that resemble crumpled paddles rather than the neat pads of more familiar prickly pears. As it matures, the unusual architectural form becomes even more dramatic and, in the right conditions, established plants may reward you with beautiful orange flowers.
Despite its exotic appearance, the Roadkill Cactus is remarkably easy to grow. Place it in a bright position with plenty of direct sunshine where possible, and allow the compost to dry out completely before watering again. Plant in a free-draining cactus compost and feed once a month during spring and summer.

Care Instructions
Light
Prefers bright light and will happily tolerate direct sunshine. During the hottest part of summer, avoid prolonged scorching midday sun behind south-facing glass.
Water
Water thoroughly, then allow the compost to dry out completely before watering again. Water less during winter, allowing the compost to remain dry for longer.
Food
Feed once a month during spring and summer with a quality liquid plant food. There is no need to feed during winter.
Humidity
This plant thrives in normal household humidity and does not require misting or additional humidity.
