Coir Pole | Natural Plant Support for Monstera & Climbing Houseplants

Coir Poles provide sturdy vertical support for climbing houseplants such as Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos, Epipremnum and Scindapsus. Made from natural coconut coir fibre wrapped around a strong plastic core, the textured surface gives stems and aerial roots something to grip as the plant grows upwards.

Climbing plants naturally use trees and other surfaces for support in the wild. Giving them a pole indoors helps keep growth upright and manageable and, in suitable conditions, can encourage more mature growth and larger leaves over time.

Which Plants Can Use a Coir Pole?

Coir poles are particularly useful for climbing and vining houseplants that produce aerial roots, including:

Which Size Coir Pole Should I Choose?

Choose a pole that gives your plant room to grow beyond its current height. It is usually easier to start with a slightly taller support than to replace a pole soon after the plant begins climbing.

How to Add a Coir Pole

The easiest time to add a coir pole is when repotting, as the pole can be positioned securely before compost is packed around it.

1. Position the pole towards the back of the plant, close to the main climbing stem.
2. Push the base firmly into the compost so that the pole stands securely.
3. Position the side of the plant with aerial roots towards the coir surface.
4. Gently attach stems to the pole using suitable plant ties or mossing pins.
5. Continue guiding new growth towards the pole as the plant develops.

Avoid fastening stems too tightly – the plant needs room to thicken as it grows.

Should I Keep a Coir Pole Damp?

You can use a coir pole simply as a dry structural support, but keeping the coir lightly damp can encourage aerial roots to grip the surface more readily. RHS recommends keeping coir-covered supports damp if you want Epipremnum stems and aerial roots to attach themselves to the pole.

There is no need to saturate the pole constantly, and avoid soaking the surrounding compost simply for the sake of keeping the pole wet.

Coir Pole vs Moss Pole

A coir pole is covered in coconut fibre and primarily provides a textured climbing surface and structural support. A true sphagnum moss pole is usually packed with moist sphagnum moss so that aerial roots can grow more extensively into the support itself.

Coir poles are simpler, cleaner and very effective when the main aim is to support and train a climbing houseplant upright.

Will a Coir Pole Make My Monstera Leaves Bigger?

Providing climbing support can help Monstera and other climbing aroids develop more mature growth, but a pole alone does not guarantee larger leaves or additional fenestrations. Good light, healthy roots, suitable watering and overall plant maturity are equally important.

In their natural habitat, plants such as Monstera and Epipremnum climb upwards using aerial roots, and providing support indoors helps replicate this growth habit.
