Cissus striata

Cissus striata, commonly known as the Miniature Grape Ivy or Ivy of Uruguay, is a graceful trailing and climbing houseplant with slender stems and small, glossy green leaves arranged in delicate three- to five-lobed shapes. Its fine foliage creates a soft, cascading effect that looks particularly beautiful trailing from a shelf, bookcase or hanging planter.

Fast-growing and easy-going, Cissus striata can be allowed to trail freely or encouraged to climb a small support using its natural tendrils. Regular trimming will keep the plant compact and encourage fuller, bushier growth.

Light & Position

Prefers bright, indirect or filtered light but will tolerate moderate light and some gentle shade. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage. A higher shelf or hanging position gives the trailing stems plenty of room to develop.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3cm of compost has dried, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Aim for lightly moist rather than constantly wet compost. Reduce watering during winter when growth naturally slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Cissus striata adapts well to typical indoor conditions and does not require unusually high humidity. Keep away from cold draughts and ideally maintain temperatures above approximately 15°C.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.

Trailing or Climbing?

Cissus striata is naturally a climbing vine with tendrils, but indoors it is just as attractive allowed to cascade. Let the stems trail from a shelf or hanging planter for a relaxed look, or train them around a small trellis or support if you prefer more upright growth.
