Ceropegia woodii 'Luuk' (hangpot)

Ceropegia woodii ‘Luuk’ is a distinctive variegated form of the much-loved String of Hearts, with fine trailing stems and beautifully patterned heart-shaped foliage. Unlike the classic silver-marbled form, ‘Luuk’ develops irregular splashes of fresh yellow-green and cream against a deeper green background, giving each leaf its own individual pattern.

Young stems can emerge with a soft pink tone before becoming greener as they mature, adding another layer of colour to this unusual cultivar. Its long, delicate vines make it perfect for shelves, high plant stands and hanging displays where the foliage can cascade freely.

Light & Position

Give ‘Luuk’ plenty of bright, indirect light to maintain the strongest variegation and compact growth. Some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sunlight, which may scorch the paler sections of the leaves.

In lower light, growth may become more stretched and the foliage can lose some of its strongest colour contrast.

Watering

Allow the compost to dry well between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. Ceropegia stores water in its fleshy leaves and underground tubers, so it is far more tolerant of a little dryness than constantly wet compost.

Water particularly sparingly during winter when growth slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Happy in normal household humidity and does not require misting. Keep in warm indoor conditions and away from cold draughts.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. A low-nitrogen feed used occasionally is sufficient; avoid overfeeding.

Trailing Growth

Ceropegia woodii ‘Luuk’ has a naturally trailing habit and can develop impressively long vines over time. If the plant becomes too long or sparse, trim the stems to encourage fresh growth and use the cuttings for propagation.
