Calluna vulgaris ‘Agneta’

Calluna vulgaris ‘Agneta’ is a particularly striking member of the Beauty Ladies heather collection, combining masses of crisp white flower buds with bright yellow-green evergreen foliage. Its upright habit and unusually fresh colouring make it a beautiful choice for autumn pots, window boxes, doorsteps and garden planting.

Supplied in a 12cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 25cm tall, ‘Agneta’ gives instant seasonal colour while remaining compact enough to mix easily with other autumn and winter plants.

What Makes ‘Agneta’ Different?

Unlike traditional flowering heathers, ‘Agneta’ is a bud-flowering Calluna. Its white flower buds remain closed rather than opening fully, which means they hold their colour for much longer and are less affected by autumn wind and rain.

The white buds contrast beautifully with the plant's yellow-toned evergreen foliage, giving ‘Agneta’ interest even after the main autumn display has passed.

Position & Light

Calluna grows best in a bright, sunny outdoor position. Plenty of light encourages compact growth and helps maintain the strongest foliage colour.

It will tolerate some light partial shade, but avoid deep shade, where growth may become weaker and the display less colourful.

Watering

Keep the compost lightly and consistently moist, particularly while the plant is establishing or growing in a container. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid leaving the pot sitting permanently in water.

Container-grown heathers can still dry out during cool or windy autumn and winter weather, so check the compost regularly rather than assuming rainfall will always be enough.

Soil & Repotting

Calluna vulgaris is an acid-loving plant. If planting in the garden, choose acidic to neutral, free-draining soil. In containers, use a peat-free ericaceous compost rather than ordinary multipurpose compost.

If your garden soil is alkaline or chalky, growing ‘Agneta’ in a container of ericaceous compost is the easiest option.

Feeding

Heathers need relatively little feeding. For plants growing in containers, apply a light dose of ericaceous fertiliser during spring while new growth is developing.

Avoid overfeeding, as Calluna naturally thrives in relatively nutrient-poor conditions.

Pruning & Care

Once the autumn display has faded, lightly trim the flowering shoots to help maintain a compact, bushy shape.

Avoid cutting hard back into old woody stems, as Calluna does not reliably regenerate from old wood.

Growing in Containers

‘Agneta’ is particularly good for autumn and winter container displays. Combine it with grasses, evergreen foliage plants, small conifers or other heathers for a long-lasting seasonal arrangement.

Make sure outdoor containers have good drainage, particularly through winter, as cold, permanently waterlogged compost can damage the roots.

Growing in the Garden

Plant into acidic, well-drained soil in a sunny position. ‘Agneta’ works beautifully towards the front of borders, in rock gardens, heath-style planting and grouped with other Calluna cultivars.

Once established, it is a hardy, low-maintenance evergreen shrub that provides useful structure and foliage colour throughout the year.
