add a pot to fit this plant

Calathea lancifolia, commonly known as the Rattlesnake Plant, is a striking tropical houseplant with long, gently rippled leaves patterned with alternating light and dark green markings. Turn a leaf over and you'll find a rich purple-burgundy underside, giving the plant even more colour and movement.

Now botanically also known as Goeppertia insignis, the Rattlesnake Plant belongs to the Marantaceae or Prayer Plant family. Its leaves naturally change position in response to changing light levels, making it a particularly characterful addition to a houseplant collection.

Light & Position

Prefers moderate to bright, indirect or filtered light. Keep away from strong direct sunlight, which can scorch or fade the patterned foliage. It will tolerate some gentle shade, making it suitable for rooms without intense sunlight.

Watering

Keep the compost lightly and evenly moist during the growing season, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly and let excess water drain away rather than leaving the roots sitting in soggy compost. Reduce watering slightly during winter while keeping the compost from drying out completely.

Calatheas can be sensitive to a build-up of minerals in water. If you notice persistent brown leaf tips and have particularly hard tap water, rainwater or filtered water can be helpful.

Humidity & Temperature

The Rattlesnake Plant appreciates moderate to higher humidity and warm, stable conditions. Keep it away from cold draughts, radiators and other direct heat sources, ideally at temperatures above approximately 16°C.

Regular misting is not essential. If your home is very dry, positioning plants together or using a room humidifier is more effective than misting the leaves.

Feeding

Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at the recommended dilution. Reduce or stop feeding during the darker winter months when growth slows.
