Begonia maculata, often known as the Polka Dot Begonia, is one of the most striking houseplants you can grow. Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, it is loved for its elegant olive-green leaves covered in silver spots and the rich burgundy-red colouring on the underside of each leaf.
Given the right conditions, Begonia maculata will reward you with clusters of delicate pale pink flowers throughout the growing season. Place it somewhere warm and bright, away from direct sunlight and cold draughts, to keep it looking its best.
This plant enjoys moderate to high humidity. A pebble tray can help increase humidity levels, particularly during winter when central heating can dry the air. If misting, do so sparingly and avoid saturating the foliage. Water when the top few centimetres of compost feel dry, allowing excess water to drain away freely.
