Aspidistra elatior (21cm pot)
Cast Iron Plant
Aspidistra elatior, better known as the Cast Iron Plant, is one of the most resilient and enduring houseplants you can grow. Its tall, glossy dark green leaves rise elegantly from the base of the plant, creating a beautifully simple, architectural shape that works particularly well in hallways, living rooms and other spaces where light levels are less than ideal.
Supplied as a substantial specimen in a 21cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 80cm+ tall, this is a mature, established plant with considerably more presence than the smaller Aspidistras usually available. Slow growing and extraordinarily long lived, it is a brilliant choice if you want an impressive floor-standing plant without demanding care requirements.
Aspidistra elatior holds the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, recognising its reliable garden and cultivation performance.
Why Is It Called the Cast Iron Plant?
Aspidistra became hugely popular as a houseplant during the Victorian era because of its remarkable ability to cope with conditions that many other plants dislike. Low light, cooler rooms, fluctuating temperatures and the occasional missed watering are all tolerated surprisingly well.
That reputation for toughness earned it the name Cast Iron Plant, and it remains one of the very best choices for difficult indoor positions today.
Light & Position
Aspidistra elatior is one of the finest houseplants for low light and shady positions. It is particularly useful for hallways, north-facing rooms and corners where many tropical houseplants would struggle.
Low to moderate filtered light is ideal. Avoid prolonged direct sunshine, which can bleach or scorch the dark green leaves.
Although Aspidistra tolerates shade exceptionally well, no houseplant can grow indefinitely in complete darkness, so the plant should still receive some natural daylight.
Watering
Water thoroughly during spring and summer, then allow the upper layer of compost to dry before watering again. Aspidistra is forgiving if occasionally allowed to become a little dry and is much more likely to suffer from overwatering than underwatering.
Reduce watering considerably during autumn and winter, particularly if the plant is growing in a cooler room.
With a substantial 21cm nursery pot, always check the compost below the surface before watering, as a large root ball can remain moist for much longer than expected.
Humidity & Temperature
Unlike many tropical-looking foliage plants, Aspidistra is perfectly happy in normal household humidity and does not require regular misting or a humidifier.
It is also unusually tolerant of cooler and fluctuating indoor temperatures. The RHS recommends temperatures of approximately 5–20°C, making it particularly useful for cooler hallways, stairwells and rooms away from direct heat sources.
Feeding
Feed approximately once a month from spring through to late summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing.
There is no need to feed during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
Growth & Care
Aspidistra elatior grows from underground rhizomes, gradually producing new leaves and forming an increasingly substantial clump. It is naturally slow growing, which is one reason larger specimens like this take time to produce.
There is very little pruning required. Simply remove occasional yellow or damaged leaves by cutting them cleanly at the base.
Wipe the broad leaves occasionally with a soft damp cloth to remove dust. This keeps the foliage looking its best and allows the plant to make maximum use of the available light.
Repotting
Aspidistra is happy being relatively snug in its pot and does not need frequent repotting. A mature plant may remain in the same container for several years before needing to move up a size.
When repotting eventually becomes necessary, use a good quality, free-draining houseplant compost and choose a container only slightly larger than the existing nursery pot.
Where Does Aspidistra elatior Come From?
Aspidistra elatior is native to southern Japan, where it grows as a rhizomatous evergreen perennial in subtropical conditions.
Its ability to thrive with relatively little light beneath surrounding vegetation helps explain why it has become such an exceptionally successful shade-tolerant houseplant.
