Aspidistra elatior, commonly known as the Cast Iron Plant, is one of the most resilient and easy-care houseplants you can own. With its rich green, glossy leaves and elegant upright growth, it brings a calm, timeless feel to any home while thriving in conditions where many other houseplants struggle.

A firm favourite in Victorian homes, the Cast Iron Plant has earned its reputation as one of the toughest indoor plants available. It thrives in low light conditions and tolerates occasional neglect, making it perfect for darker rooms, hallways, offices and anyone new to houseplants.

Light & Position

Extremely adaptable. Thrives in low to moderate indirect light and will tolerate deeper shade better than most houseplants. Avoid direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry out between waterings. Very drought tolerant once established, so it is better to underwater than overwater.

Feeding

Feed monthly during spring and summer to support healthy growth.

Why you'll love it

  • One of the toughest indoor plants available
  • Excellent for low light spaces
  • Elegant, architectural foliage
  • Perfect for beginners or busy homes
  • Easy-care and long-lived

Care Instructions

Light

Prefers indirect bright light and will tolerate direct sunlight in the morning or evening. Too much direct sunlight can result in scorched leaves.

Water

Water thoroughly, then allow the top half of the compost to dry before rewatering. Over-watering will cause root rot.

Food

Feed every second time you water through spring and summer with a quality liquid plant food. There is no need to feed this plant in winter.

Humidity

This plant enjoys humidity. Place in a bathroom and/or mist regularly with water. Remove dust from the leaves with a damp cloth to improve photosynthesis.
