add a pot to fit this plant

Anthurium clarinervium is a highly sought-after species prized for its beautiful heart-shaped leaves, velvety texture and distinctive pale veining. Native to southern Mexico, this starter-sized plant is a lovely way to begin growing one of the most desirable foliage Anthuriums and watch its dramatic leaves develop as it matures.

Supplied in a compact 7cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 15cm tall, this is a young specimen rather than a mature plant. The leaves start relatively small, with their characteristic heart shape and contrasting veins becoming increasingly pronounced as the plant establishes and produces larger foliage.

What Makes Anthurium clarinervium Special?

Unlike the familiar flowering Anthuriums grown for their colourful spathes, Anthurium clarinervium is grown primarily for its extraordinary foliage. Mature leaves are thick, dark green and almost velvet-like, with bold silvery-white veins creating a striking pattern across the surface.

Starting with a younger plant gives you the opportunity to watch this transformation happen over time, with each new leaf typically becoming larger and more impressive as the plant matures.

Light & Position

Anthurium clarinervium grows best in bright, indirect light. Position it close to a bright window but protect the leaves from prolonged strong direct sunshine, particularly during the middle of the day.

Good light encourages healthy growth and larger foliage, while excessively low light can result in slower growth and smaller new leaves.

Watering

Allow the upper part of the compost to partially dry between waterings. Water thoroughly when required, allowing excess water to drain freely from the nursery pot.

Avoid keeping the compost constantly wet or leaving the plant standing in water, as Anthuriums are sensitive to prolonged waterlogging. Young plants in small pots can dry relatively quickly, so check the compost regularly rather than watering to a fixed schedule.

Humidity & Temperature

Anthurium clarinervium appreciates moderate to high humidity, particularly while young and establishing. A bright bathroom, grouped plant display or naturally humid room can suit it well.

Keep the plant warm, ideally around 18–25°C, and protect it from cold draughts and sudden changes in temperature.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Young plants do not require heavy feeding, so use a diluted feed and avoid fertilising excessively.

Reduce or stop feeding during the cooler months when growth naturally slows.

Potting & Growing On

This is a starter-sized plant and is best allowed to establish in its existing nursery pot before being moved into a larger container. Repot only once the root system has filled the pot, increasing the size gradually rather than moving immediately into a much larger container.

Use a loose, airy and free-draining houseplant or aroid compost to help keep plenty of oxygen around the roots.

Why You'll Love It

  • Highly distinctive heart-shaped foliage
  • Beautiful silvery-white leaf veins
  • Velvety texture becomes more dramatic with maturity
  • Starter size lets you watch the plant develop over time
  • Compact 7cm nursery pot
  • A highly desirable species for foliage plant collectors
  • Stunning mature specimen with the right care

Pet & Child Safety

Anthuriums are harmful if eaten and contain calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive system. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and young children and discourage chewing or ingestion.
