Anthurium Banderola Roja

Anthurium Banderola Roja is a red flamingo flower with an unusual shape. Slender, ribbon-like red spathes rise on fine stems among the green foliage, giving the plant an airy silhouette. At approximately 50cm tall in a 14cm nursery pot, it has enough height to stand out on a sideboard or plant stand.

What Makes Banderola Roja Special?

Roja was the first red variety in Anthura’s Banderola series, known for its abundance of long-lasting blooms. Each red ribbon is a modified leaf called a spathe. Look closely and you’ll see a slender spike beside it: this is the spadix, where the tiny true flowers grow.

Banderola Roja received Bronze in the houseplants category at the HTA New Plant Awards.

Light & Position

Choose a warm spot with bright, indirect light to encourage repeat flowering. A position near an east-facing window works well. Protect the foliage from harsh midday sun and keep it away from radiators and cold draughts.

Watering & Feeding

Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry. Water thoroughly, let the nursery pot drain and empty any water that collects in the decorative pot. Check less often in winter, when the compost takes longer to dry.

Feed during spring and summer with a liquid houseplant fertiliser, following the dilution instructions. When a spathe fades, snip its stem near the base with clean scissors.

Pet & Child Safety

Anthuriums are harmful if eaten. Keep out of reach of pets and young children, and wear gloves when trimming stems as the sap can irritate skin.
