Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek’ Variegata is a truly show-stopping foliage plant and one of the most sought-after variegated Alocasia. Its arrow-shaped, velvety deep green leaves are dramatically marked with creamy white variegation, creating a striking contrast that feels both luxurious and architectural. Each plant is completely unique, with natural variation in patterning that makes every specimen special.

Commonly known as Elephant Ears, Alocasia are native to the tropical rainforests of Asia and Eastern Australia, where they grow beneath the canopy in warm, humid conditions with bright, filtered light. The ‘Frydek’ variety is particularly admired for its compact habit and rich, suede-like leaf texture, which elevates it well beyond a standard houseplant.

Alocasia grow from tuberous rhizomes that store water and nutrients, allowing them to thrive in their native environments. In the UK, this means careful watering is essential, as these plants are more sensitive to overwatering, especially in cooler months. Allow the compost to dry slightly between waterings and always check moisture levels before adding more water. A warm position above 16°C, away from draughts, will help keep this plant happy and growing steadily.

This variegated Frydek is best suited to bright, indirect light, where its dramatic markings remain crisp and well defined. With the right care and positioning, it becomes a striking statement plant that brings depth, texture and a strong tropical feel to interiors.

Care Instructions

Light

Prefers moderate to bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can result in scorched leaves.

Water

Water thoroughly, then allow the top half of the compost to dry out completely before rewatering. This plant stores water and therefore overwatering can cause root rot.

Food

Apply a high quality liquid fertiliser fortnightly in the spring and summer. Do not feed in the autumn and winter months.

Humidity

This plant enjoys high humidity. Place in a bathroom and/or mist regularly with water. Or place on a pebble tray filled with water just below the top of the pebbles.
