Adiantum raddianum (17cm pot)

Adiantum, commonly known as the Maidenhair Fern, is a beautifully delicate indoor fern with fine dark stems and soft, fan-shaped green leaflets. Its light, airy foliage creates a graceful, almost cloud-like effect, making it a lovely choice for bathrooms, bedrooms and other calm, leafy corners of the home.

Supplied in a generous 17cm nursery pot at approximately 40cm tall, this is a full, established plant that creates an immediate display. As a living plant, individual specimens will naturally vary slightly in shape, height and fullness.

Light & Position

Give your Maidenhair Fern plenty of bright, indirect or filtered light. Avoid strong direct sunshine, particularly through glass, as the delicate foliage can scorch easily.

A bright bathroom, kitchen or other naturally humid room can be particularly suitable, provided the plant still receives good natural light.

Watering

Keep the compost consistently lightly moist and avoid allowing it to dry out completely. Maidenhair Ferns can respond quickly to dry compost, with the fine foliage becoming brown or crispy.

Water thoroughly when needed and allow excess water to drain away. Although this fern enjoys moisture, it should not be left permanently sitting in waterlogged compost.

Humidity & Temperature

Maidenhair Ferns appreciate moderate to high humidity and warm, stable indoor conditions. Keep away from cold draughts, radiators and other direct heat sources.

They are particularly well suited to naturally humid rooms, although good airflow is still important.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing. Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at reduced strength and avoid overfeeding, as ferns generally prefer a gentler feeding regime.

Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Growth & Care

Maidenhair Ferns produce fresh fronds from the base of the plant and can gradually develop into a dense, soft mound of foliage. Older, damaged or dried fronds can be removed close to the compost level to keep the plant looking fresh and encourage new growth.

If the plant is accidentally allowed to dry and loses some foliage, do not assume it is lost. Cut back damaged fronds, resume regular watering and, provided the roots remain healthy, fresh growth can often emerge from the base.
